కాళ్ళు పైకెత్తి, చేతులు నిలకడగా పట్టి,
నేను కొండ దిగడానికి సిద్ధంగా ఉన్నాను.
బాణంలా, జాగ్రత్తగా మనసుపట్టి నడుపుతుంటే
గాలి పక్కనుండి సర్రున పోతోంది.
జోరుగా, ఇంకా జోరుగా,
గుండే ఒక్కసారి ఎవరో పైకెత్తేసినట్టు,
మనసునవ్వులో తేలుతోంది, గొంతు అరుపులతో,
“ఓ పక్షిరాజమా, చూడు, చూడు, నేనూ ఎగురుతున్నా.
ఇదేనా, ఇదేనా నీ ఆనందహేతువు?
అలా అయితే, ఓ విహంగమా నేను కుర్రాణ్ణయినా
ఒక అద్భుతమైన క్షణం పాటు
నీలా గాలిలో నేనూ తేలిపోయాను.
ఓ హృదయమా! ఏదీ చెప్పు, సృష్టిలో దీన్ని
మించిన బ్రహ్మానందం మరోటుందేమో?
ఇది స్కేటింగు కంటే కూడా మిన్న,
నేలమట్టానికి ఉక్కుతో అతకబడి ఉంటుంది
జోరు నెమ్మదిగా తగ్గుతోంది,
నేను నా గాలిపడవలో కాసేపు తేలియాడతాను
ఇక చక్రాలు తిరగడం మానేసి,
నేను పెడలుమీంచి కాళ్ళు తీసి నేలకి ఆన్చేదాకా.
చిత్రం! ఇంత ఎత్తైన కొండా
చివరకి ఒక లోయలోకి ముగుస్తోంది. అయితేనేం,
ఎవడు కష్టపడి పైకి ఎక్కుతాడో,
వాడికోసం రెక్కలు సిద్ధంగా ఎదురుచూస్తుంటాయి.

Going down Hill on a Bicycle
(A BOY’S SONG)
.
With lifted feet, hands still,
I am poised, and down the hill
Dart, with heedful mind;
The air goes by in a wind.
Swifter and yet more swift,
Till the heart with a mighty lift
Makes the lungs laugh, the throat cry:—
‘O bird, see; see, bird, I fly.
‘Is this, is this your joy?
O bird, then I, though a boy
For a golden moment share
Your feathery life in air!’
Say, heart, is there aught like this
In a world that is full of bliss?
‘Tis more than skating, bound
Steel-shod to the level ground.
Speed slackens now, I float
Awhile in my airy boat;
Till, when the wheels scarce crawl,
My feet to the treadles fall.
Alas, that the longest hill
Must end in a vale; but still,
Who climbs with toil, wheresoe’er,
Shall find wings waiting there.
